Malampa Province
Malampa Province is made up of the islands of Malekula, Ambrym, and Paama (the small island with the villages of Liro and Vaoleli shown in the bottom right-hand corner of the image). The provincial capital is Lakatoro, a small community just south of Norsup on Malekula.
The work of the Trust in Malampa Province began in 2010 when it began its relationship with the Maskelyne Islands in southeast Malekula. Since then, the work has expanded into more areas of Malekula from the north to the south. It has also expanded onto the islands of Ambrym and Paama by way of cyclone relief and recovery. The Trust works closely with the health and education teams of the Malampa Provincial Government in carrying out most of its work. It has also worked with the local Department of Forests.

Snapshots
Covid-19 – The Trust took part in Covid-19 health education programmes in 2020 and, after Covid-19 was detected in Vanuatu in early 2022, the Trust provided financial assistance to enable provincial health teams, the police and Red Cross to jointly facilitate awareness about setting up community isolation centres on Malekula, Ambrym and Paama.
Cyclone Recovery – Following twin cyclones Judy and Kevin in late February 2023, water filters, hygiene kits, sleeping mats and solar lights were distributed to vulnerable households on Paama, southeast Ambrym and southwest Malekula. After Cyclone Lola in October 2023, the Trust was a part of the province’s assessment team for south and southeast Malekula. This team also distributed drinking water and water filters.
Post-Cyclone Recovery – With the Trust’s assistance, the Secretary of the Paama Area Council, since February 2023, has been running a series of community training and engagement sessions. This is a targeted exercise, encouraging women representatives in particular, to manage the shared use of communal tap filters attached to standpipes or rainwater tanks. Sessions in schools are included.
