Supporters of the Trust’s 2012 Fundraiser Quiz in Auckland, New Zealand

The Butterfly Trust is grateful to the following organisations for generously supporting its Fundraiser Quiz Night 2012 in aid of projects in Vanuatu.

The Quiz

The Empire Tavern. When you stand facing the fine Victorian brick construction of the Empire Hotel, it’s difficult to imagine Auckland when the pub was built in 1870.

The Empire stood out like a monument – an architectural gem surrounded by wooden working class homes, and virtually on the waterfront. Pubs weren’t just venues to have a drink. They were meeting places where colonialists mulled over the development of Auckland, argued politics and very often, simply argued, fired up by amber liquid and home made wine. Seamen used to trudge eagerly from the foreshore, up the dirt road with money burning in their pockets and thirst burning their throats with need.  It’s difficult to imagine, but the Empire was one of 91 pubs serving a population of a mere 13,000.

The Empire today is more than just a run of the mill pub. They will organise amongst other things, big name bands and DJ’s, an annual ball for customers, trips to rugby games with a grandstand for them in the Garden Bar.

The Butterfly Trust’s upcoming Quiz Fundraiser is being held on 14 April at the Garden Bar of the Empire. As well as providing the venue for hosting this event, the Empire is contributing a number of bar tabs towards the prize packs for the winning quiz teams.

Believe It Or Not Quiz Events. Established in 1988, in Auckland, Believe It Or Not Quiz Nights are New Zealand’s largest provider of trivia, quiz questions, weekly pub quizzes and quiz nights to the corporate sector.

“Our ‘Believe It Or Not’ weekly quiz nights, which began in 1998, and our Vogue Minogue music trivia nights now span a network of over 150 pubs, clubs and bars New Zealand wide, and our corporate quiz nights provide businesses from all over New Zealand with the chance to run their very own interactive ‘Believe It Or Not’ quiz night at their workplace, or selected venue.”

The Butterfly Trust is very grateful to the individuals who donated the cost of a quiz pack, and to Believe It Or Not Quiz Events for subsequently upgrading that quiz pack.  The upcoming fundraising event will be hosted by the Trust’s very own Quiz Master, Vijay Satyanand, with the assistance of his team of supporters.

So come along everyone, participate in the Butterfly Trust Fundraiser Quiz 2012, help rural communities in Vanuatu & win an array of goodies. There will be prizes for 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 2nd last places! Tickets cost $25 ($200 for a table of 10).

Lonely Planet. A beat-up old car, a few dollars in the pocket, and a sense of  adventure…..That’s all Tony and Maureen Wheeler needed for the trip of a lifetime. They  met on a park bench in Regent’s Park and married a year later. For their  honeymoon, they decided to attempt what few people thought possible – crossing  Europe and Asia overland, all the way to Australia. It took them several months  and all the money they could earn, beg or borrow, but they made it. And at the  end of it all, they were flat broke… and couldn’t have been happier. It was too amazing an experience to keep to themselves. Urged on by their  friends, they stayed up nights at their kitchen table writing, typing and  stapling together their very first travel guide, Across Asia on the Cheap.

Today, Lonely Planet creates the world’s most informative and comprehensive guide books and is renowned for its first-hand approach, up-to-date maps and commitment to providing the best information for travellers. Operating for more than 30 years with offices in Melbourne, London and Oakland, globally there are 500 staff members and 300 authors. There are over 400 titles encompassing guidebooks, language guides, pictorials, digital, images and tv.

At Lonely Planet ‘sustainable’ and ‘responsible’ have always been parts of our  vocabulary. ‘Responsible travel’ means assessing our impact on the environment and local cultures and economies – and acting to make that impact as positive as possible. We are including more information in our guidebooks on how you can personally travel more responsibly.”

ecostore. ecostore comes to you from New Zealand. Founders Malcolm and Melanie Rands started from the basement of their home in a permaculture eco-village in Tai Tokerau (Northland) in 1993. Since then they have been perfecting plant and mineral based home, body and baby care products with no nasty chemicals, which are healthier and safer for you and the planet.

We believe our products are healthier for you because all ingredients are carefully assessed for potential skin irritation, skin absorption, respiratory effects and cancer concerns. The lower pH, sodium, alkalinity and phosphorus levels of our cleaning products also make them safer for our environment. We solicit the help of award winning scientist and humanitarian, Sir Ray Avery, as our lead formulating chemist and other chemists experienced in eco chemistry. We are constantly reviewing our products. As new science comes to hand, we evaluate and change to improve our formulations.

ecostore does not test on animals. We are a Choose Cruelty Free accredited company. Minimising packaging is an ongoing journey for us. By 2012 we will be including a percentage of post consumer recycled plastic (from roadside collection) in our bottles. Sustainability is an integral part of our business and we seek out suppliers that share our commitment. We support the production of sustainable palm oil through the GreenPalm programme. This means that for every tonne of palm oil/palm kernel oil we use in the production of ecostore products, we have paid a voluntary premium to a palm oil producer which is operating within strict guidelines for social and environmental responsibility. Visit us online for more.”
